Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser — an intense, pulsating beam of light — to remove unwanted hair, this is what the IPL stands for in IPL Laser Hair Removal.
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.
Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes multiple laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period. Maintenance treatments might be needed as well.
Before a treatment is started, you need a consultation and patch test, please book this in to help us work out the best treatments for you.

More details about IPL Laser Hair Removal
Which areas can be treated with SkinBase IPL?
Unwanted hair can be removed from most parts of the body including legs, upper lip and chin, bikini line, underarm, back, etc. See our price list for exact details, and ask for anything we don’t cover.
How many treatments are needed?
For permanent hair reduction, most areas of the body will generally need between 6-10 treatments however this can vary from client to client. With regards to the face, hair growth on this area is usually stimulated by hormonal imbalances and other relation factors and we advise 10-12 treatments may be required to see reduction in re-growth.
Will it work on my skin?
SkinBase IPL has been clinically proven to work on almost all skin types except very dark skin. Dark hair on light skin is the easiest to treat because the colour difference enables the light to be easily absorbed by the melanin in the hair without absorbing too much into the skin. Only white and grey hairs do not respond to any IPL or laser treatments.
Is SkinBase IPL safe?
SkinBase IPL technology meets CE European regulations only granted to treatments that are clinically tested and proven to be safe and effective.
How does it feel?
A slight warming tingling sensation best describes the feeling experienced during SkinBase IPL treatment. This is minimised by a specially developed cryogenic-handset that’s is placed on the skin before the treatment, the SkinBase IPL is infinitely more comfortable than most conventional methods like waxing, electrolysis and many other IPL systems.
What do I need to do before and after treatment?
If you are considering IPL Laser Hair Removal, make sure you:
- Stay out of the sun. A tan increases the risk of side effects, such as skin lightening. If you have a tan — either from sun exposure or fake tan products — wait until the tan fades completely before undergoing laser hair removal. We recommend staying out of the sun for up to six weeks before laser hair removal, so maybe a treatment for Britains cold winters!
- Avoid plucking, waxing and electrolysis. These hair removal methods can disturb the hair follicle and interfere with laser hair removal so should be avoided – never mix hair removal treatments.
- Shaving is OK as it preserves the hair shaft and follicle. In fact, shaving is recommended so that the laser doesn’t target hair above the skin, potentially causing burns.
